Bhimbetka at a Glance
The Bhimbetka Rock Shelters are located in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, on the southern edge of the Vindhyan Hills, within the central Indian plateau. The site lies in the Vindhyan sandstone landscape, while the successive ranges of the Satpura Hills occur farther south. The shelters form part of the broader Ratapani landscape.
Bhimbetka is not a conventional cave system carved by humans. It is a spectacular complex of naturally formed rock shelters, overhangs, recesses and shallow cavities produced by geological weathering and erosion. Five major clusters contain more than 700 shelters, with more than 400 painted shelters reported across the complex.
Its importance comes from the unusual combination of:
- Lower Palaeolithic archaeological evidence
- Acheulean stone-tool technology
- Middle and Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic evidence
- Later Chalcolithic and historical occupations
- Extensive rock paintings
- Natural sandstone shelters that protected people and their artwork for thousands of years

Bhimbetka was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003.
How Did the “Caves” of Bhimbetka Form?
1. Formation of the Sandstone
The story begins with the Vindhyan sandstone.
Millions of years ago, layers of sand accumulated in an ancient environment. Over time, these layers were compressed and cemented into sandstone. At Bhimbetka, the rocks belong mainly to the Bhander Group of the Vindhyan Supergroup.
The sandstone retained its natural layers, joints and cracks, which later became important in shaping the landscape.
2. Formation of the Cave-Like Structures
The sandstone hills were not originally filled with caves. Instead, their natural cracks, layers and weaker portions provided pathways for weathering.
As these weak areas gradually broke down, recesses and openings developed beneath stronger portions of rock.
These eventually produced the characteristic:
- overhangs,
- recesses,
- niches,
- cavities,
- and rock shelters
seen at Bhimbetka.
Strictly speaking, most are rock shelters rather than true caves because they are open to the exterior.
3. Role of Erosion
Erosion gradually enlarged these openings.
Rainwater and surface runoff repeatedly acted on the exposed sandstone, while weathering weakened the rock. The weaker material was removed more easily, whereas harder portions survived longer.
This differential erosion gradually enlarged some recesses and produced larger protected spaces.
The process was extremely slow, operating over geological time rather than during human occupation.
4. Why Sandstone Was Different from Granite and Other Igneous Rocks
The nature of the rock strongly influenced the landscape.
Bhimbetka’s sandstone was formed in layers and contains natural planes of weakness. Weathering could therefore exploit these layers and weaker zones, helping produce broad overhangs and shelters.
Granite and other massive igneous rocks, by contrast, form from cooling molten material and generally lack sedimentary layering. Their weathering commonly produces rounded boulders, blocks and tors, although they can also develop caves and shelters along fractures.
Therefore, the point is not that sandstone forms caves while granite does not. Rather, the particular structure of Bhimbetka’s sandstone was favourable for producing the extensive rock shelters found there.
5. Entry and Use by Humans
The shelters existed before their prehistoric occupants arrived.
Early humans found these naturally protected spaces useful because they provided:
- protection from sun and rain,
- relatively secure places for occupation,
- access to the surrounding landscape and resources,
- and suitable rock surfaces.
Over successive periods, humans occupied and reused many shelters. Some surfaces were eventually decorated with prehistoric paintings, transforming naturally formed geological spaces into important archaeological and cultural sites.
The complete sequence
Ancient sand deposits → sandstone → natural cracks and layers → weathering → erosion → rock shelters → human occupation → rock art
Archaeological Importance: The Human Story Begins Before the Paintings
Bhimbetka is much more than a rock-art site.
The archaeological sequence begins in the Lower Palaeolithic, with Acheulean technology, and continues through later Palaeolithic and Mesolithic phases into later periods.
Stone tools include:
- handaxes,
- cleavers,
- choppers,
- flakes,
- scrapers,
- and microliths.
This is important because the earliest human occupation of Bhimbetka is older than the securely established painted sequence.
In other words:
Human occupation ≠ beginning of painting.
The archaeological evidence shows a very long history of human use of the landscape, while the surviving painted record represents later phases of that history.
9. Discovery of Bhimbetka
The modern archaeological recognition of Bhimbetka is associated with V. S. Wakankar.
In 1957, Wakankar visited the area and recognised the unusual sandstone formations as resembling prehistoric rock shelters he had encountered in Europe. He subsequently investigated the area with other archaeologists and identified its extraordinary prehistoric significance.
Excavations and subsequent research established a long archaeological sequence extending from the Lower Palaeolithic into later historical periods.
10. But Was Bhimbetka the First Rock Art Discovered in India?
No.
This is an important distinction for examinations.
The first recorded discovery of prehistoric rock paintings in India is generally associated with Archibald Campbell Carlleyle, who discovered paintings at Sohagighat near Mirzapur in 1867–68.
Carlleyle was particularly significant because he recognised that the paintings could be associated with Stone Age remains found in the shelters. His discovery preceded the famous recognition of the paintings at Altamira in Spain by about twelve years.

These are two different milestones and should not be confused.
11. Why Is It Called “Bhimbetka”?
The name is traditionally associated with Bhima, one of the Pandavas of the Mahabharata.
The popular interpretation connects Bhimbetka with Bhima’s sitting place.
This is a traditional/legendary explanation rather than archaeological evidence that Bhima actually occupied the site. The local tradition explains the name through the association of Bhima with the landscape.
13. The Rock Paintings: What Do They Show?
Bhimbetka’s paintings provide a visual record of changing human life.
The earliest surviving artistic phases focus heavily on:
- wild animals,
- hunters,
- hunting weapons,
- human figures,
- and relationships between humans and animals.
Later paintings increasingly show:
- group activities,
- dancing,
- ritual scenes,
- social interaction,
- domesticated animals,
- riders,
- weapons,
- battles,
- religious symbols,
- clothing,
- and geometric decoration.
The paintings therefore allow us to see a broad transformation:
Hunter-gatherer world → increasingly complex social life → contact with agricultural communities → historical societies with riders, weapons and political/religious imagery.
14. Chronological Development of Bhimbetka Paintings
The paintings have traditionally been divided into seven periods, although exact dating of individual paintings remains difficult because many images were superimposed on one another.
Period I — Upper Palaeolithic
The earliest recognised artistic phase contains large, relatively simple linear figures.
Common subjects include:
- large wild animals,
- human figures,
- hunting,
- and animal-human interaction.
Some early paintings are associated with colours such as green and dark red.
The exact dating of the earliest paintings has been debated, so claims that every early Bhimbetka painting is 30,000–40,000 years old should be treated cautiously.
Period II — Mesolithic
This is the most numerous and visually varied phase.
Human figures become smaller and more stylised.
We see:
- bows and arrows,
- barbed spears,
- pointed weapons,
- hunting groups,
- dancing,
- ritual activity,
- gathering,
- animals,
- pregnant women,
- mother-and-child figures,
- burials,
- and other aspects of social life.
The appearance of microlithic technology during the Mesolithic reflects broader changes in hunting and subsistence strategies.
The paintings also become more dynamic.
Instead of merely showing an animal, artists increasingly depict:
people doing things.
That is a major development in the visual language of Bhimbetka.
15. Why Did Mesolithic Art Become More Dynamic?
It would be too simplistic to say that the paintings improved simply because humans possessed microliths.
Rather, several changes occurred together.
The Mesolithic witnessed:
- greater technological specialisation,
- microlithic tool industries,
- changing hunting strategies,
- broader exploitation of resources,
- more complex social interactions,
- and increasingly varied representations of human activity.
The art reflects these changes.
The subject moves from:
“Here is an animal.”
towards:
“Here are people hunting, dancing, gathering, interacting and participating in collective activities.”
That is a significant conceptual development.
16. Period III — Chalcolithic
The Chalcolithic paintings provide evidence for contact between the inhabitants of the rock shelters and agricultural communities of the Malwa region.
The imagery begins to reflect a world in which:
- agriculture exists,
- exchange networks develop,
- pottery becomes important,
- and communities are no longer exclusively represented through the hunter-gatherer worldview.
This is particularly important for understanding cultural interaction.
Bhimbetka was not isolated from the wider social and economic landscape.
17. Early Historic and Medieval Paintings
Later phases contain very different imagery.
These include:
- horse riders,
- elephant riders,
- weapons,
- decorated clothing,
- religious symbols,
- geometric designs,
- inscriptions or script-related evidence,
- and battle scenes.
The famous hunting scenes of the prehistoric world therefore give way to representations of a more politically and socially differentiated society.
The presence of riders and weapon-bearing figures is especially significant.
It suggests a transformation in the social world being represented:
individual hunter → hunting group → organised community → warrior/rider → historically identifiable social and political world.
This should not be interpreted as a literal, uninterrupted record of the rise of a single “tribal polity”; rather, the changing imagery reflects increasingly complex social, technological and cultural environments.
18. What Animals Are Represented?
Animal imagery is one of the defining characteristics of Bhimbetka.
Reported animals include:
- Gaur / wild cattle
- cattle
- buffalo
- rhinoceros
- wild boar
- deer
- chital
- sambar
- barasingha/swamp deer
- antelopes
- tiger
- elephant
- bear, including sloth bear
- wolf
- hyena
- monkeys
- langur
- hare
- rodents
- fish
- turtle
- snake
- peafowl
- other birds
- dog
- and other less clearly identifiable animals.
Deer and antelope are among the particularly numerous subjects.
Early paintings especially emphasise large wild animals and hunting relationships.
19. The Zoo Rock
One of the best-known areas is the Zoo Rock Shelter.
It contains a dense collection of animal imagery and is famous for its variety of fauna.
The paintings include representations of:
- elephants,
- bison/gaur,
- rhinoceroses,
- deer,
- tigers,
- bears,
- and other animals.
The concentration of animals creates almost a visual catalogue of the prehistoric environment.
The important point is not that the artists were trying to produce a modern scientific “zoo”.
Rather, the shelter demonstrates how central animals were to the visual and cultural world of prehistoric communities.
20. The Great Boar
The Great Boar is among Bhimbetka’s most famous images.
It depicts a huge, powerful animal confronting a small human figure.
The animal has been interpreted as a composite or chimeric creature, combining features resembling a boar, ox and elephant.
This makes it particularly interesting.
It may not be a straightforward naturalistic representation of an ordinary wild boar.
Instead, it could represent a mythological, symbolic or imaginative creature.
That uncertainty is itself important: prehistoric art cannot always be read as literal documentary evidence.
21. Hunting Scenes
Hunting is one of the dominant subjects.
Humans are represented using weapons such as:
- bows,
- arrows,
- spears,
- barbed spears,
- pointed sticks,
- and other hunting implements.
Some scenes show groups cooperating in hunting.
This provides indirect evidence for:
- collective action,
- hunting strategies,
- weapon technology,
- and the importance of animals in subsistence.
Other scenes show people:
- collecting honey,
- gathering food,
- digging for animals such as rats,
- dancing,
- and engaging in community activities.
Thus, Bhimbetka is not simply a “hunting gallery”.
It is a record of everyday life.
22. Dancing Scenes
Several paintings show groups of human figures holding hands or arranged in rhythmic formations.
These are generally interpreted as communal or ritual dances.
They are important because they reveal something that stone tools cannot easily tell us:
prehistoric people had collective social and possibly ritual lives.
The paintings therefore provide evidence not merely of survival but also of:
- celebration,
- cooperation,
- identity,
- ritual,
- and social bonding.
The comparison sometimes made with modern Indian folk traditions such as Bihu should be used cautiously. Similar circular or collective dance formations do not prove direct cultural continuity.
23. How Were the Paintings Made?
The basic process was probably straightforward but technically effective.
Step 1 — Obtain a mineral or earth pigment
A coloured mineral or naturally occurring earth was collected.
Step 2 — Crush it
The material was broken into smaller pieces.
Step 3 — Grind it
Grinding produced a fine pigment.
Step 4 — Mix it
The pigment could then be prepared into a usable paint with a liquid or binding medium.
Different communities and periods may have used different recipes.
Possible binding materials include:
- water,
- plant gums or resins,
- animal fats,
- and other organic substances.
The exact recipe was not necessarily identical across all paintings.
24. The Colours of Bhimbetka
The dominant colours are:
Red + White
with occasional:
Yellow + Green + Brown + Black and other shades.
Different sources describe the precise pigment sources somewhat differently, and the composition of every pigment cannot be assumed to have been identical.
Red
The most important red pigment is associated with iron oxides, especially hematite, commonly referred to as geru.
Yellow
Yellow can be produced from yellow iron oxides such as goethite, and heating iron-rich ochres can alter their colour towards yellow, orange or red-brown depending on the mineral and treatment.
White
White pigments may have been obtained from calcareous materials such as limestone, although the precise source can vary.
Green
Green pigments are less common and more complicated.
Some Bhimbetka studies have associated green pigment with green earth/terra verte-type materials, while older descriptions have also referred to green mineral sources such as chalcedony. The exact mineral composition should therefore not be reduced to one universal recipe.
Black
Black could be obtained from carbonaceous materials such as charcoal, while manganese-bearing minerals can also produce dark pigments.
25. Why Are Red and White So Common?
Red and white are especially common because suitable mineral sources are relatively widespread and chemically durable.
Iron-oxide pigments are particularly important.
Unlike many organic dyes, iron minerals do not simply biodegrade.
That is one reason mineral pigments could survive for very long periods.
26. Why Are There Almost No Blue Paintings?
Blue is comparatively rare in prehistoric Indian rock art.
The reason is not that prehistoric people were incapable of seeing blue.
The problem was pigment availability.
Stable, naturally occurring blue pigments suitable for making durable paint are much less common than:
- iron oxides,
- manganese minerals,
- limestone,
- and earth pigments.
Mineral blue pigments such as lapis lazuli are geographically restricted and were not a natural component of the local Bhimbetka environment.
Therefore:
No abundant local blue pigment → blue is rare in the surviving rock art.
27. What Kind of Brushes Were Used?
We cannot identify the exact brush used for every Bhimbetka painting.
However, experimental and comparative research suggests that prehistoric artists could have used:
- fingers,
- plant fibres,
- twigs,
- animal hair,
- feathers,
- or other flexible organic materials.
Some fine lines may have been produced with a narrow fibre or hair-like implement, while broad areas could have been applied with fingers or larger tools.
The important point is that “brush” does not necessarily mean a modern manufactured paintbrush.
28. How Did the Paintings Survive for Thousands of Years?
This is one of Bhimbetka’s greatest scientific stories.
Several factors worked together.
1. Mineral pigments
Iron oxides and other mineral pigments are chemically more durable than plant dyes.
2. Protected rock surfaces
Many paintings occur deep inside:
- overhangs,
- recesses,
- niches,
- ceilings,
- and relatively sheltered walls.
They were therefore less exposed to direct rainfall.
3. Sandstone surface chemistry
Mineral pigments could interact with the rock surface and become relatively stable.
4. Limited sunlight
Some protected surfaces received less direct ultraviolet radiation.
5. Natural isolation
For long periods, some shelters experienced relatively little human interference.
6. Layering
Later artists sometimes painted over earlier paintings, creating superimposition.
Paradoxically, this also gives archaeologists evidence of different chronological layers.
Thus, preservation is not due to one magical chemical reaction.
It is the combined result of:
durable mineral pigments + sheltered sandstone surfaces + microenvironment + limited exposure + long periods of relative protection.
29. Is It Correct to Say the Paint “Seeped Into” the Sandstone?
Only with caution.
Sandstone is porous, so pigment can interact with and penetrate surface irregularities.
But it is too simplistic to say that the colours survived merely because they “soaked deep into the rock”.
The more accurate explanation is:
mineral pigments were applied to relatively protected sandstone surfaces, where physical adhesion, surface penetration and chemical stability helped them survive.
30. Why Do Some Paintings Look Like They Were Added Later?
Because they often were.
Bhimbetka contains superimposed paintings.
One artist could paint over an older figure.
Another generation could subsequently add new figures to the same surface.
This creates a kind of prehistoric visual palimpsest.
A single rock surface may therefore contain evidence of multiple episodes of artistic activity separated by considerable periods of time.
This is why one should never assume that everything visible on a particular wall belongs to one period.
31. Why Did People Paint?
We do not know with certainty.
There is no written explanation from the artists themselves.
Several interpretations have therefore been proposed.
Hunting Magic
One possibility is that images of animals and hunting were connected with ritual attempts to influence hunting success.
However, this is a theory, not an established fact.
Shamanic or Ritual Interpretation
Some researchers have proposed that certain unusual figures, animals and scenes could have been connected with ritual or altered states of consciousness.
Again, this remains interpretive.
Communication
Paintings could have communicated information about:
- animals,
- hunting,
- people,
- social events,
- and important activities.
Social and Ritual Expression
Dancing and group scenes suggest that painting may have been connected with collective identity, ritual and social life.
Memory and Record-Keeping
The paintings may also have helped preserve memories of important activities.
But calling them a fully developed “pictographic language” would be too strong.
They are visual representations, but there is no evidence that Bhimbetka developed a writing system in the modern sense.
The safest conclusion is:
The paintings had multiple functions, and their exact purpose probably varied according to period, community and individual image.
32. Did They Paint Only for Hunting?
No.
That is one of the biggest misconceptions about Bhimbetka.
The paintings include:
- hunting,
- animals,
- dancing,
- honey collection,
- gathering,
- women digging for food,
- ritual activity,
- human relationships,
- pregnancy,
- burials,
- riders,
- battles,
- weapons,
- religious symbols,
- and decorative designs.
The art therefore documents a changing human society rather than one single activity.
The “Mammoth-Like” Animal
Some Bhimbetka figures have occasionally been described as resembling enormous or unusual animals.
Such interpretations should be treated carefully.
A large prehistoric animal representation does not automatically constitute evidence for a mammoth.
India had a complex Pleistocene megafauna, but identifying an individual rock painting as a mammoth requires strong morphological and chronological evidence.
The famous Great Boar itself demonstrates why caution is necessary: the creature appears deliberately composite rather than a straightforward zoological depiction.
37. Bhimbetka as a Visual History of Human Society
The most powerful way to understand Bhimbetka is to follow the changing subject matter.
Palaeolithic world
Dominated by:
- large animals,
- hunting,
- simple human figures,
- direct animal representation.
Mesolithic world
Increasing emphasis on:
- group hunting,
- bows and arrows,
- microlith-associated lifeways,
- dancing,
- gathering,
- ritual,
- social interaction.
Chalcolithic world
Increasing evidence of:
- contact with agricultural communities,
- exchange,
- pottery-related cultural associations,
- and changing economic life.
Historic world
Increasing representation of:
- horses,
- elephants,
- riders,
- weapons,
- battles,
- religious symbols,
- clothing,
- geometric decoration,
- and more socially differentiated figures.
The transformation can therefore be expressed as:
Animals → Hunters → Groups → Ritual/Social Life → Agricultural Interaction → Riders/Warriors → Historical Society
This is not a perfectly linear evolutionary ladder, but it provides a useful framework for understanding the changing subject matter.
38. What Happened to the Art Over Time?
The paintings did not suddenly change from “primitive” to “advanced”.
Instead, different traditions overlapped.
Older paintings could remain visible while later artists added new imagery.
Consequently, Bhimbetka is better understood as a long-lived visual archive.
It records changing:
- technologies,
- subsistence strategies,
- social organisation,
- beliefs,
- artistic conventions,
- and relationships with animals.
39. Bhimbetka and Later Indian Folk and Tribal Art
Modern Indian traditions such as:
- Warli
- Gond
- Madhubani
- and other regional folk and tribal traditions
are sometimes compared with Bhimbetka.
There are genuine visual similarities, particularly:
- simplified human figures,
- animals represented through strong outlines,
- rhythmic group scenes,
- repeated motifs,
- geometric organisation,
- emphasis on community life,
- and relationships between humans, animals and nature.
However, similarity does not prove direct descent.
For example:
Bhimbetka
Prehistoric and historical rock art produced over a very long chronological span.
Warli
A living regional painting tradition associated particularly with communities of Maharashtra.
Gond
A living Central Indian artistic tradition with distinctive motifs, patterns and symbolic systems.
Madhubani
A different regional tradition from Bihar with its own historical development, themes and conventions.
Therefore, the safest conclusion is:
Later Indian folk and tribal art can show striking thematic and formal parallels with prehistoric rock art, but direct uninterrupted artistic descent from Bhimbetka cannot simply be assumed.
